Video Tour of our Master Bedroom

A few days ago we did an interview with the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette about this blog and the projects that we have completed in our home. As we were giving the photographer a tour through the house he asked us to do a short video…. a live, unscripted video! I was instantly transported back to speech class in high school and college. I was so nervous to talk about the house with nothing planned!! The link’s been active for a few days but it took me awhile to even work up the nerve to watch the video 😉

Anyways, I finally took a look and it’s not half bad. Check it out for yourselves 🙂

Help out our neighborhood! Please vote for Justin and Rachel!

Hello blog readers!

I want to introduce you to a couple friends of mine! This pair is extra special because they’re neighbors, too! Justin and Rachel live around the corner from us and have an awesome Queen Anne style home that they are painstakingly restoring.   They are both young architects with a passion for preservation and improving our neighborhood and downtown area.  As you can imagine, we have a lot in common.  😉

Recently, they entered a contest sponsored by Davinci Roofscapes to win $5K which they will use to paint the exterior of the home this summer.

“We love our historic home in the up and coming neighborhood of Williams Woodland Park. It was one of the first planned communities in Fort Wayne, IN at the turn of the 20th century, where many of the areas prominent citizens chose to locate. The homes were built with such character and charm, and have seen many changes over the past 110 years. Our half timbered Queen Anne is no exception. It has been plagued by white washing over all the details, and deterioration of many wood turnings and other architectural features. It has been slow going, and a lot of work trying to bring this beauty back from years of neglect. One of the major projects recently completed was replacing the original damaged slate roof (which had been overlaid with asphalt shingles) with the durable, long-lasting, and beautiful DaVinci Bellaforte Slate tiles in the “Villa’ color blend. The roof has set a great stage to bring this old home back to life with color, whereas it’s current white facade disappears into the background. As a young newlywed couple, we have hopes of our home honoring the amazing history of the people whom have lived here before us. However, at the same time, we want to ‘Shake it Up” by reflecting the modernity, liveliness, and creativity with which we live our lives! We are hoping our home will be yet another colorful asset to our beautiful neighborhood!”

THANK YOU!!

Living in the ’07 rocks!

We truly love our neighborhood and it has been an awesome experience getting to know the residents and businesses in this area. We love the friendliness of the people, the accessibility of the park system, the proximity to downtown, and the unique character of all the area neighborhoods. Also, let’s not forgot the tacos!! There is nowhere up north that you can get tacos as good as the ones out this way! 😉

It’s nice to see that the ’07, as we all like to affectionately call it, is getting some positive press for a change! Check out the article for yourself!

A local treasure: The Wood Shack

For all of you interested in historic home renovation we have a great resource here in Fort Wayne called The Wood Shack. They specialize in salvaging architectural parts from old houses and buildings. For homeowners like us this is an awesome place to pick up doors, trim, windows, etc that look like they belong in our own house! The shop is run by a super friendly and knowledgeable husband/wife duo and their store is a jam-packed architectural heaven.  They are proudly located downtown behind the Tincaps baseball stadium and they are big supporters of our historic neighborhoods and restoration in general.

As part of our kitchen remodel we have made the choice to convert the existing utility closet into a first floor powder room.  We currently have one full bath upstairs and a random  toilet in the middle of the basement laundry room but as time goes on we have realized that a first floor bathroom is pretty much a necessity.  We are going to have to remove the exterior door from that utility room in order to full enclose the area and make it functional as a bathroom.   This means that we will be adding an exterior door directly off the north side of the kitchen with direct access to the back porch.

We were in the market for an old exterior door and The Wood Shack had some great finds!

Our budget for this mini project was $200.00 and we were looking for a door with a good amount of glass so that we could capitalize on the natural light.  We were so excited to find this beauty!!

I am in L-O-V-E!! I can’t wait to see how this will look in our new kitchen. And now with a bit of elbow grease…well, maybe a lot of elbow grease…we are going to clean this door up and make it our own!

Before…and AFTER!!

Wow! It has been months without an update posted on here about our progress…and yet it seems as if the entire holiday season passed in the blink of an eye! We worked at full speed for several months in order to get the house ready for the Holiday Home tour. The two day tour was a complete success bringing in over 1300 guests and lots of exposure for our great neighborhood as well as The Reclamation Project, a community initiative to create a center for refugee immigrants which occupies the space at the former Rialto Theater on Calhoun Street. The two days of the tour were absolutely exhausting but hearing so many people say nice things about the work that we have done made it totally worth it. We opened up the foyer, the living room, the dining room, the master bedroom, the bathroom, and Raul’s office for the tour.  I thought it would be fun to show all of you just how far we have come since purchasing this home last March (wow, 1 year already!).  I’ve been seriously procrastinating as it is now almost Spring and I am just now getting around to editing and posting pictures of our house decorated for Christmas but better late than never! I was so fortunate to have the help of my mother and gram who helped me decorate for the tour. Also, my grandmother even asked some of her friends to donate some Christmas decorations which just looked absolutely beautiful in our home. I am so thankful! With everyone’s help I was able to do so much more than I could have managed on my own.

So without further ado please take a look at the colorful before and the marvelous after! (click on each picture to see it bigger)

Holiday announcement!

I have been keeping a secret for the past couple of months but now I feel like I can finally share it with all of you without dying of anxiety. Every year our neighborhood hosts a Holiday Home Tour on the first weekend of December…and we are honored to have one of the homes featured on the tour!!

At first I was kinda, totally freaking the freak out! When we were approached about being on the tour I kind of let my excitement bubble over and I just blurted out YES!!!! Anyone who knows me, knows that this is 100% atypical. I’m the kind of girl who doesn’t make decisions for weeks! So basically the whole thing went down like this. I answered the door, listened to a 30 second schpiel (?) about how they needed homeowners to volunteer their homes for the tour, said YES, and then I closed the door, turned around, and saw our 1/2 finished, unfurnished, huge, money-guzzling, back-breaking, 100-year-old house. :/

I admit there was a time period where I thought there was no way this house would be in any kind of condition to have a thousand people walking through and admiring (critiquing) it…but we have really made a lot of progress in the past few weeks. And although the house is nowhere near done I feel okay with people seeing it. It will be advertised as a “work in progress” and that it truly is. There will be no room that is 100% done but I hope people can understand the general vibe I am going for. We are trying very hard to restore the old, charming features of the house while still maintaining something of a modern feel to the decor. This is surprisingly hard to do on a budget. Thank God for second hand stores and Pinterest! Oh and a bit of crafting skills don’t hurt either! So basically we are opening the entry way, living room, dining room, master bedroom, upstairs hall, bathroom, and office to the public. The deal is that the house can be featured again in a few years once we have completed all of the progress we intend to make. There are a lot of people who return to the Holiday Tour and who would remember the home and appreciate the progress we make.

Here is a great article in the newspaper about one of the other homes on the tour. The homeowners, Jeremy and Ashley, have been working on their house for seven (!!!) years and it really shows. I was in awe when I got the chance to see the inside. Trust me you will be, too.

Anyways, the tour is on Sat and Sun December 1st and 2nd. It is an awesome time and great for date night or girls night or family fun night…you get the picture! Tickets are $10 pre-sale or $12 the day of the tour. Or make it an event for 4 and you get all tickets for $36. Pick up yours at Nature’s Corner, Bittersweet Gifts, Antiques on Broadway, Candlelight Antiques or any Lake City Bank Location ahead of time or at Simpson United Methodist Church on the days of the tour. For more info visit www.WilliamsWoodlandPark.com.

If you have been reading the blog with interest or are just curious to see the house I would love to see you! Come check it out!

Exciting news about our zip code!

As time goes by and I get to know our neighboorhood a little better, I am convinced that we picked a great location for our first home.

Not only are we minutes from both downtown and Jefferson Pointe, but we are also within biking distance to several area parks including Swinney Park, Lakeside Park, and our favorite, Foster Park.  There are several great local businesses and restaurants AND a taco stand that’s literally two blocks from our house. We can easily explore downtown on foot or attend a Tincaps game, all without ever turning the key in the ignition to our car.

Recently, both the News Sentinel and the Journal Gazette have featured two stories which highlight some of the good things going on in our area.
